By Marta Vilar – MADRID (Econostream) – European Central Bank Governing Council member Gediminas Šimkus said on Tuesday that the easing cycle was nearing its end but might not yet be over.
In remarks to reporters in Vilnius, Šimkus, who heads the Bank of Lithuania, said that inflation had reached the ECB’s 2% target and was expected to remain around that level in the medium term.
This suggested that the easing phase was nearly finished, though Šimkus avoided stating it outright, saying instead that “Santa Claus may come, he may trim the Christmas tree, but not significantly.”
The Bank of Lithuania confirmed the comment to Econostream.
