ECB’s Lagarde: To Do Whatever It Takes to Ensure Inflation Stays at 2%
4 July 2025

By David Barwick – FRANKFURT (Econostream) – European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said Friday that the ECB had delivered price stability, given euro area inflation of 2%, and would continue to do so at all cost.
In an interview on the morning show of German national television network ARD, Lagarde stuck to the beaten path, calling the safeguarding of price stability ‘our determination, our commitment, our duty’.
‘We have delivered, inflation is measured at 2%, and we will continue doing so’, she said. ‘We are committed to that 2% target and we’ll do whatever it takes — to borrow a very famous formula — to make sure that it stays at that level.’
There was ‘a lot of uncertainty, a lot of unpredictability around us at the moment, but on the price front, we will be certain and stable’, she vowed.
The trade conflict in particular was ‘one of the major sources of uncertainty’, she said.
Asked about the possibility of the euro supplanting the dollar, she called again for the euro area economy to be made more resilient. However, she noted with regard to the potential ascendancy of the common currency, ‘Those changes take a long time’.
Lagarde reiterated that the ECB was ‘in a good position now’.
