By David Barwick – FRANKFURT (Econostream) – European Central Bank Governing Council member Yannis Stournaras on Wednesday welcomed his nomination for a third consecutive term as governor of the Bank of Greece, calling it “a profound honour” and a sign of the government’s continued confidence in him.

Stournaras said in a statement issued after the Greek government spokesman’s announcement that the nomination was also “a pledge of continued confidence.”

He said he would remain committed to the institution’s core responsibilities, describing these as “safeguarding monetary and financial stability, thereby contributing to economic growth for the benefit of the country and Greek citizens.”

The statement also pointed to the central bank’s approaching 100th anniversary, saying the institution “in 2028 will be celebrating its centenary, having played a pivotal and creative role in economic developments.”

In accordance with the Bank of Greece statute, the bank’s General Council is to be convened in the coming days to formulate its proposal to the Cabinet.
