By David Barwick – FRANKFURT (Econostream) – European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde is expected to have the Governing Council watch a David Attenborough-narrated video about the massive cost of the destruction of ocean ecosystems next Tuesday evening, according to a person familiar with the agenda of the upcoming monetary policy meeting.
The objective of the screening is to underscore the broader theme of sustainability, which is of increasing importance to the ECB.
Beyond that item, the Governing Council’s Frankfurt schedule is set to remain routine, with lunch, a seminar, and a dinner planned for Wednesday.
The agenda could of course still change, so the plan should not be treated as definitive.
If carried out, the initiative would be a sensible reminder of a topic of major importance, as the degradation of ocean ecosystems poses a serious threat with growing economic and financial relevance.
Veteran British natural historian Attenborough has recently been associated with high-profile work highlighting the damage being done to marine environments, including coral and broader ocean habitats. In particular, he narrated “Ocean,” a feature-length documentary about ocean degradation that runs about 95 minutes.
