By Marta Vilar – MADRID (Econostream) – The Dutch government has appointed Olaf Sleijpen as the next president of De Nederlandsche Bank, to succeed current DNB chief and European Central Bank Governing Council member Klaas Knot on July 1.
‘On the recommendation of the DNB supervisory board, Finance Minister Eelco Heinen nominated Sleijpen for appointment by royal decree on Friday’, said the DNB in a press release.
Sleijpen has served on the DNB’s Executive Board since 2020, overseeing key areas such as economic policy and research, financial stability, financial markets, payment systems, market infrastructure, and statistics.
He has also regularly attended meetings of the Governing Council alongside Knot.
‘Olaf is a substantively strong, honest and connecting leader’, said Knot about his successor, according to the DNB’s press release. ‘I have every confidence that he will continue to develop DNB with authority and vision. I wish him every success and satisfaction in this’, he added.
Before joining the Executive Board, Sleijpen held various senior roles at DNB, including Director of Insurer Supervision, Policy Supervision, and Pension Fund Supervision.
Earlier in his career, he served as an advisor to former ECB President Wim Duisenberg and later held leadership positions at pension fund ABP and pension provider APG before returning to the central bank.
