ECB’s Nagel: European Leaders Should “Speak Up” Against Trump's Fed Attacks
30 September 2025

By Marta Vilar – MADRID (Econostream) – European Central Bank Governing Council member Joachim Nagel said on Tuesday that Europe had to speak up for the Federal Reserve’s independence amid US President Donald Trump’s attacks.
Speaking in a book presentation in London, Nagel, who heads the Deutsche Bundesbank, said that Trump’s push for interest rate cuts and his efforts to remove Fed policymaker Lisa Cook were “not acceptable.”
Europe had to “speak up here,” he said, as he described leaders in Brussels as “too quiet, too reluctant, too diplomatic.”
He said such a situation was affecting democracy and the fundamental values of the system, and that policymakers needed to speak out more forcefully about it.
