By David Barwick – FRANKFURT (Econostream) – European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said Monday that with the international role of the US dollar increasingly called into question, the euro could become more important as a global currency.

In a speech at the Jacques Delors Centre at Hertie School in Berlin, Lagarde said that there was ‘uncertainty about the cornerstone of the system: the dominant role of the US dollar’, but that the ‘changing landscape could open the door for the euro to play a greater international role.’

For this to happen, Europe had to stand firmly for free trade and be capable of defending it; to make deeper and more liquid its capital markets; and to unite politically behind a rules-based system, she said.
