By Marta Vilar – MADRID (Econostream) – European Central Bank Executive Board member Piero Cipollone said on Wednesday that  in light of recent developments, the ECB had to strengthen the European economy.

In a panel discussion at the Conference on globalisation and geo-economic fragmentation organised by Bruegel and De Nederlandsche Bank in Amsterdam, Cipollone said that the ECB ‘should think about the policy to make our economy more resilient and stronger.’

Europe was ‘obsessed’ with what happened in the US due to excessive dependency, which was also ‘mental’, according to Cipollone.

When comparing this situation to the pandemic, this crisis had a clear solution from the beginning whereas the pandemic did not, he said.

‘At this point in time it seems to me that we have many, many instruments that we can deploy one by one, in combination’, he said.

This did not argue for the ECB to be complacent, but to be ‘attentive and be reactive’.

‘I get a little bit of comfort of what we have learned from this past episode’, he said.
