By David Barwick – FRANKFURT (Econostream) – The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) on Monday announced the appointment of former European Central Bank Governing Council member Pablo Hernández de Cos to the position of General Manager of the BIS.

As reported by Econostream this morning, de Cos, who headed Banco de España until last June, will succeed Agustín Carstens at the head of the Basel, Switzerland-based institution starting on 1 July 2025.

In a press release issued by the BIS, Governing Council member and Banque de France Governor François Villeroy de Galhau, who chairs the BIS Board of Directors, was quoted as calling de Cos ‘a person of remarkable calibre and global experience’.

‘[W]e are fully confident that he will embody the spirit of international trust and technical excellence on which the BIS is built’, Villeroy said.
