By Xavier D’Arcy – FRANKFURT (Econostream) – European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said on Wednesday that the ECB would do whatever it takes to bring inflation down from its currently high levels.
Speaking on a panel at the World Trade Organisation in Geneva to mark International Women’s Day, Lagarde said: ‘We will restore that price stability, we will do whatever it takes to do that.’
She said that ‘we have to do what we have to do’ in order to fight inflation, and that ‘it keeps us all up at night, because it’s not a pretty situation.’
‘Those that are the prime victims of high inflation are the underprivileged, the vulnerable, are the lowest paid, are the women… they are the first and prime victims of that situation’, she said.
Her job, she said, was ‘fighting inflation which has been generated by the energy crisis, instrumented by the terrible war against Ukraine.’
