ECB’s Wunsch: ‘I Don’t Disagree with Market Pricing for Interest Rates’
Pierre Wunsch, governor of the National Bank of Belgium, attending the session on Monetary policy normalisation at the ECB Forum 28 June 2023 in Sintra, Portugal.

By Marta Vilar – SINTRA, Portugal (Econostream) – European Central Bank Governing Council member Pierre Wunsch said on Wednesday that he was not uncomfortable with current market expectations for euro area monetary policy.

In an interview with Reuters on the margins of the ECB Forum on Central Banking 2025 in Sintra, Portugal, Wunsch, who heads the National Bank of Belgium, said that he did not ‘disagree with market pricing for interest rates.’

Despite stating that he did not endorse these expectations, he said he was not ‘uncomfortable’ with them.

I am not overly concerned about growth’, he said. Recent national PMI numbers were rather comforting. German fiscal plans are also game changing. Major fiscal expansion by a country that can afford it provides a major boost.

However, Wunsch said there was an argument for going to ‘mildly supportive’ territory as long as the recovery of the economy was delayed, which had been the case ‘a few times’, and if growth was below potential.
