ECB’s Vasle: More Information Needed for Rate Cuts After June

17 May 2024

By Aurėja Bobelytė – VILNIUS (Econostream) – A June interest rate cut is highly probable, but subsequent rate cuts require more information, European Central Bank Governing Council member Boštjan Vasle said Friday.

On the margins of a conference in Portorož, Slovenia, Vasle, who heads the Bank of Slovenia, said to Bloomberg, ‘Unless we’ll get a big surprise, June is a reasonable, realistic moment to cut interest rates, but I can’t say what will happen after that’.

Speaking about rate reductions after June, the Governing Council member said that he was open to various possibilities but that it was important to wait for new information.

‘The worst quarters for the economy are over. It looks like growth will be better this year than we had expected’, he said.
