ECB’s Vasle: Will Start Easing if Situation Confirms Convergence to Target

By Isabel Teles – FRANKFURT (Econostream) – European Central Bank Governing Council member Boštjan Vasle on Friday said that the ECB would start cutting interest rates if inflation was seen converging sustainably to the 2% target.

In a statement issued by the Bank of Slovenia, which he heads, Vasle said, ‘If these [analyses of the outlook] reinforce our assessment that inflation is moving towards the target in a sustainable manner, it would imply that the conditions are right to start easing the restrictive monetary policy stance.’

The ECB’s next steps would ‘continue to depend on the current situation’, he said.

‘In this respect, our future analyses of the inflation outlook, the path of core inflation and the strength of the impact of our measures remain crucial’, he elaborated.
