ECB’s Vasle: Expect Further Rate Hikes After March

8 March 2023

By Xavier D’Arcy – FRANKFURT (Econostream) – European Central Bank Governing Council member Boštjan Vasle reiterated on Wednesday that he expected rate hikes to continue after the central bank’s upcoming meeting in March.

In a statement released online, Vasle, who heads Banka Slovenije, said: ‘My expectation is that the March hike will be followed by further hikes until a level sufficient to return to the path of our 2% inflation target is reached.’

The release from the Slovenian central bank also noted that inflation had been moderating somewhat in recent months but remained at high levels, with core inflation also still high.

The central bank warned of wage rises, saying that ‘[r]isks to the build-up of wage pressures remain high.’
