ECB Governing Council Non-Monetary Policy Meeting Today Cancelled

25 January 2023

By Xavier D’Arcy – FRANKFURT (Econostream) – The European Central Bank’s non-monetary policy Governing Council meeting originally scheduled for today has been cancelled, according to the ECB.

The Governing Council, responsible for setting the Eurozone’s key interest rates, takes its monetary policy decisions every six weeks but also meets on a regular basis to discuss issues related to other tasks and responsibilities of the ECB and the Eurosystem.

The ECB confirmed to Econostream the cancellation of the meeting.

Euro area central bankers will convene next Thursday, 2 February to decide on the ECB’s latest monetary policy steps. Observers widely expect the central bank to hike its key interest rates by a further 50bp.

The cancellation of today's non-monetary policy meeting is unlikely to have any significant bearing on that decision, in Econostream's judgement. Such cancellations occur from time to time, principally when the ECB decides that there is no particular need for a given gathering.

The ECB's next non-monetary policy meeting is currently scheduled for February 22.
