11 May 2022

By David Barwick – LJUBLJANA (Econostream) – European Central Bank Governing Council member Boštjan Vasle on Wednesday said that inflation was increasingly widespread and that there were further price pressures coming.

In remarks at a conference to mark the 30th anniversary of the Bank of Slovenia, which he heads, Vasle said that ‘now we are faced with a situation where … there are basically many, many different groups of goods and services which are growing at more than 2%.’

There are also ‘additional pipeline pressures’ in the form of increasing input prices, ‘and there’s a high probability that they will be translated or passed through to other prices’, he said.

Moreover, ‘[w]ithin the past months we saw a significant change in our expectations and the expectations of citizens, the expectations of professional forecasters, also the expectations of firms. … we are in a different regime of inflation… The causes are much more deeply rooted.’
