By Marta Vilar – MADRID (Econostream) – European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said on Monday that she “very strongly” believed the ECB was in a good place and that it should be “agile.”

In a panel discussion at the 42nd Annual NABE Economic Policy Conference in Washington DC, Lagarde said, “I have said and I have been quoted repeatedly arguing that inflation and our monetary policy are in a good place and, you know, I am not the laughing stock of the analysts and the watchers, but I very strongly believe that we are in that good place, which combined with our key principles, which is to be relying very much on the data and multiple data on many accounts, and the fact that we are not on a preset course and that we will decide meeting by meeting, each and every step of the way we have to assess whether we are in that good place that I am characterising now, which as a result also implies that we have to be agile and determine whether something needs to be done.”

“Balance of risks, you know, we have said in our last monetary policy statement that it was broadly balanced, so not, you know,” she added.

Asked about her recent comments about completing her “mission” as the ECB president, she answered, “That’s my baseline, yes.”
