By Marta Vilar – MADRID (Econostream) – Banco de Portugal Governor Nominee Álvaro Santos Pereira said on Wednesday that he did not consider himself a “dove”.

In a parliamentary confirmation hearing that includes a non-binding vote on his appointment, Pereira said that he was “absolutely not a dove”, a term for those who favor looser monetary policy.

He noted that inflation was running near 2% and that it was “quite possible” that interest rates would stay unchanged for some time.

The ECB had inflation under control and was in a good position, he said.

Calling this “the right policy,” Pereira said it was important to leave monetary policy room to maneuver in order to support the economy if conditions worsened.

“It all depends on whether the economy improves and whether there’s a need to act,” he said.
